MARY ANN De BUY WENNIGER

Mary Ann Wenniger Printing

Artist, teacher, author became a well respected art dealer because of her art history background and a consistently thorough approach to locating, understanding and promoting original fine prints.

Mary Ann graduated from MT. St. Vincent in New York as an English major. She received an M.A. in art education from Harvard and a M.F.A. from Vermont College of Norwich University.

Mary Ann was one of the first artists to experiment with the collagraph during its genesis in the 1960's when the polymer glues were developed that make it possible to make printable permanently adhered collages. These glues and pastes made it possible to enlarge upon collage tradition that emerged in Europe after world war two, to adhere found materials to masonite bases.

The resulting print, a collagraph, is printed on wet paper that is linked using oil based inks and printed by means of a hand operated wringer type press.

Her collagraphs are admired for their hand wrought, painterly surfaces full of textures and richly contrasted colors and tones, their poetic titles and intimate subjects and their optimistic spirit. She purposely uses new colors for each print; thus each print is unique. Clients brag about getting the best inkings. The plates themselves are complete art works. They take a long time, often weeks, to assemble. Her goal is to combine the collagraph with sculptural elements. Her prints are in many private and corporate collections.
